Development

On June 21, 2022, in an interview, Kevin Costner announced that he planned to make four movies out of the premise of Horizon, and was looking to cast over 170 speaking roles.[3] In November 2022, Costner confirmed that the first film had been completed, and that the second had been greenlit, set to be filmed in Spring 2023.[6] On April 28, 2023, it was revealed that director of photography J. Michael Muro, production designer Derek R. Hill, editor Miklos Wright and costume designer Lisa Lovaas would be re-joining Costner for the second installment.[4] In August 2023, John Debney was revealed to be scoring the film.[1] On July 10, 2024, the film was removed from the August 16, 2024 release window. The news comes following the misfire of Chapter 1 over the July 4th box office frame. There are no plans to send the sequel directly to Max. There could be a theatrical day-and-date plan for Chapter 2, but that’s still being assessed. While it’s been reported that the movie was pulled –that’s a strong word which indicates Chapter 2 has no theatrical prospects. Again, no decision have been made. Costner’s core Yellowstone audience is at home, and the notion is for them to find Horizon Chapter 1 and then yearn to see part two.[7]

Filming

Production began on April 10, 2023 in Washington County, Utah.[8][9] Costner told St. George News his first choice of location on the reservation didn’t pan out, even though he kept trying to make it work. He also said he made “a snap decision” about what to do when the Santa Clara River rose about 12 feet higher than expected. The mountains nearby had a record snowfall. He said at the original location, the river came up over the suspension bridge they had built and flooded. Costner had to let go of the first location choice when he didn’t want to. He and his production company crew, Territory Pictures, looked at a backup spot on the reservation up higher, and it was really beautiful but that was the problem with that second location, it was stunning and Costner needed a more lonely place for the scene in the film. Later, Costner found a new spot he liked, also on the Shivwits reservation and the soothing sound of the Santa Clara River and soft red dirt on the Shivwits Band of Paiutes Indian reservation was the background for some movie scenes. The tribal land spans 28,000 acres in southwestern Washington County, 12 miles northwest of St. George, near Ivins, Utah. Shivwits Reservation Land Resources Manager Travis Duran told St George News that the Oscar-winning director and crew treated the land and its people respectfully.[10] On May 2, 2023, cast and crew began arriving in the St. George area for filming in various locations in Washington County including the northeastern most part of the Mojave Desert and adjacent to the Pine Valley Mountains.[11] Filming will also take place in Moab, Utah from June 1 until the 20.[12][13] On May 12, 2023, Ella Hunt stated that it was her final day as her character for a while, signaling that she was done filming for Part 2. On June 23, 2023, Isabelle Fuhrman confirmed that filming had ended for Horizon: An American Saga Part 2.[14]

Casting

In April 2023, Glynn Turman, Kathleen Quinlan and Giovanni Ribisi joined the cast alongside Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Ella Hunt, Will Patton, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman and Thomas Haden Church who are reprising their respective roles from the first film.[4] On June 30, 2023, Austin Archer was revealed to have been cast in the franchise. Archer has already shot his scenes for the first and second film.[5]

Release

Horizon: An American Saga Part 2 currently has no release date after being pulled from the schedule.[7] The film was originally set to be released theatrically on August 16, 2024 in the United States, being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.[15] K5 International was set to handle international sales on the film at the American Film Market.[2]

Sequels

In June 2022, Costner stated he plans to make four Horizon films in total, shot back-to-back.[3] Filming for the third part began on May 2, 2023 in the St. George area and other various locations in Washington County including part of the Mojave Desert and adjacent to the Pine Valley Mountains.[11] Production on the third film was halted of the 2023 WGA writers and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA actors strike.[16]
